A fair comparison of various fluorescence microscopies that takes advantage of three-dimensional resolution has to rely on the volume resolution. In the essay “A short evaluation of various microscopies” we introduce this concept and use it to evaluate the performance of single-, two-photon and confocal fluorescence microscopes.
